Alerting services
When you have been working on a subject for a longer time, you might be interested in being kept up-to-date automatically. There are various services that can be used:
- Books
- Journals (table of contents)
- New database content (search alerts)
- Patents
- Citation Alerts
- Current Research
Books
Several publishers send you alerts when new books on your research subject are being published. The following publishers offer this service:
Journals (table of contents)
Most journals offer the possibility to receive the table of contents of a new issue by e-mail. TUlib – the Online Instruction Tool explains how you can set up such a journal issue alert.
Using the ISI database Web of Knowledge it is possible to create a list of journals and set up an alert on the table of contents of these journals. For more information see the paragraph My Journal List in the helpfile of the Web of Knowledge.
Bibliographic databases
Some databases provide an alerting service that keep you informed about new material that is included in the database that match your search criteria. These alerting services are also called: search alerts. TUlib gives you a detailed explanation about this subject. Patents
Patent Alert is a free e-mail publication for people interested in patents. Upon subscription, you will receive periodical updates about inventions recently patented in the United States
Citation Alerts
In Web of Science and ScienceDirect it is possible to set up a citation alert. You will then receive an e-mail message when an article that you have selected has been cited by a new article that has been added to the specified database.

Current Research
The NOD (Nederlandse onderzoeks databank) has its own current awareness service. With this service it is possible to subscribe to research information about a specific subject on the basis of your own search criteria. Boeken
Diverse uitgevers attenderen u als er nieuwe boeken op uw vakgebied verschenen zijn bij uitgevers
De volgende uitgevers/boekhandels bieden deze dienst aan:
Tijdschriften (inhoudsopgaven)
De meeste tijdschriften bieden de mogelijkheid om automatisch per e-mail de inhoudsopgave te ontvangen van een nieuw tijdschriftnummer. In TUlib – the Online Instruction Tool wordt uitgelegd hoe u hiervan gebruik kunt maken.
Via ISI's Web of Knowledge is het mogelijk om alerts op de inhoudsopgaves van meerdere tijdschriften op te zetten. Zie voor meer informatie het onderdeel My Journal List in de Web of Knowledge helpfile.
Bibliografische databases
Enkele attenderingsdiensten houden u automatisch op de hoogte van nieuw materiaal dat aan een database is toegevoegd en overeenstemt met uw zoekcriteria. Deze attenderingsdiensten worden ook wel search alerts genoemd. In TUlib vindt u hierover meer uitleg. Patenten
Patent Alert is een gratis publicatie die verspreid wordt via e-mail en bedoelt is voor mensen die geinteresseerd zijn in patenten. Na inschrijving krijgt u periodiek een update met nieuwe uitvindingen die zijn gepatenteerd in de Verenigde Staten.
Citatie Alerts
In Web of Science en ScienceDirect is het mogelijk om een citatie alert op te zetten. Citatie alerts sturen u een e-mail wanneer een door u geselecteerd artikel wordt geciteerd door een nieuw artikel dat opgenomen wordt in de betreffende database.

Lopend onderzoek
De NOD (Nederlandse onderzoeks databank) heeft zijn eigen attenderingservice. Via deze attenderingsfunctie kunt u zich abonneren op onderzoekinformatie over een bepaald onderwerp aan de hand van uw eigen zoekcriteria. U ontvangt vervolgens regelmatig per e-mail een overzicht van de onderzoekinformatie die recentelijk aan de NOD is toegevoegd. Kijk voor meer informatie op : NOD: attendering.
