Social Bookmarking

With social bookmarking, you can save links to interesting online content on a website rather than on your computer.

This has many advantages! You can:

  • access and organise references from anywhere
  • share your references with anyone
  • use other people's references for inspiration and to discover new information

How to use social bookmarking?

For this TUlib website, we are also using http://delicious.com to refer you to interesting webpages elsewhere. Look at the tag clouds on the lower right side of the pages.

This movie from CommonCraft shows how to use the Delicious Social Bookmarking service.

Tags

When you save a link with a social bookmarking service, you should tag it with useful terms.

Tags will help you:

  • organise your bookmarks, so you can find the right information quickly
  • tell other people what the bookmark is about
  • remember why you bookmarked this information
  • find popular information that has been bookmarked by others

Adding tags is extremely quick and easy. You can make up your own tags, but usually you can select tags from other users (see: Learn more)

People tag what they like, so tagged information tends to be useful. Popular tagged information has been selected by many people, which can be an indication of quality.

There are many services available:
