Citation Analysis

In Web of Science you can either create a Citation Report of an author or build up a Citation Map, where you can see the connections with other research groups.

The Citation Report provides you with the following statistics:

  • the number of publications for each year
  • the number of citations for each year
  • the total number of citations
  • the average number of citations per year
  • the h-index of that author (a parameter that qualifies the scientific quality of an author by the number h of his papers that are at least h times cited).

These parameters give an impression of the research activity of an author within a given period of time.

The Citation Map is a graphic network that relates an original work to the cited and citing articles, with the option of navigating from one author to another.

Comparing two authors

Comparing h-indexes works better for authors in the same field of research, since there are differences in the style of publications and the number of journals from one field to another. Take care: there are authors who can publish fewer articles than others but in journals with a higher impact factor.

Koen

Aerospace Engineering, TU Delft

h-index: 13

Wilhelm

Aerospace Engineering, TU Dresden

h-index: 9

Which author has the highest credentials, Koen or Wilhelm?

Which author would you choose to cite?

Attention: to compare authors you have to take into account more indicators: total number of publications, total number of citations, publication period, field of research….
