Citation analysis

In most article databases, each article has a times cited number. this enables you to assess the quality of a paper: the higher the number of citations, the more valuable the paper.

Why is there a citation analysis?

Citation analysis is a way to determine:

  • the quality of an article
  • the quality of a journal
  • the reputation of an author

Why would you use citation analysis?

  • It provides a measure of the quality or reputation of an author which you can use for the purpose of comparison.
  • You can use citation analysis to create a science map: who is working on which topic?

Where can you find citation indexes for analysis?

In most bibliographic databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar

How does it work?

For example: who wrote the best article on 'growth method carbon nanotubes'?

  1. Go to the Web of Science
  2. Type in 'growth method carbon nanotubes'

You will see a list of results sorted by publication date.

3.   Make a citation analysis of this topic by selecting Times cited
from the drop-down menu Sort by.

The most cited article now appears at the top of the results list.

4.   Click on Analyse results and choose Author from the drop-down menu.

A top ten of authors cited on this topic appears.
