What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons (CC) offers authors the possibility of using copyright in a flexible way. CC licenses enable copyright holders to grant some or all of their rights.

You can choose a suitable CC license on http://creativecommons.org/license/ and as a result you will then get a piece of HTML code which you can use on your website to show others what is and is not allowed with your work.

Why would you use it?

If you use a CC license on your work, you change the copyright from "All rights reserved" to "Some rights reserved" (Creative Commons 2008). This makes it possible for others to use your work, according to the limits you set.

For example, you can put a CC license on:

• your Flickr pictures, allowing others to use them non-commercially without asking you for permission
• your band's new song, to allow other musicians to remix it  - Radiohead has done this with a music video, for example
• your master's thesis - you might get famous!

What are you allowed to do with work under Creative Commons?

This depends on the type of license. Basically, there are four types of licenses, which also can be combined:
