Importing references: more advanced options
Finding import filters
Databases are increasingly offering a "direct export to EndNote" option, which means that you don't need import filters.
If you do need an import filter, check:
Importing references from another EndNote library
There are three ways to import references from another EndNote library into your own library:
- Use Copy and Paste to copy references between EndNote libraries.
- Drag and drop references between two open EndNote libraries.
- Import a complete EndNote library using File -> Import...
Select the EndNote library you want to import as the Data File to open and choose "EndNote Library" as Import Option.
Importing references from Reference Manager
- In Reference Manager, go to References -> Export...
- Choose "RIS" as Output format and save the file to your computer by clicking "Export".
- In EndNote, go to File -> Import...
- Select the Reference Manager file and "Reference Manager (RIS)" as the Import Option.
Importing references from RefWorks
- In RefWorks, go to References ->
Export...
- Choose the Bibliographic Software option and save the file to your computer.
- In EndNote, go to File -> Import...
- Select the Refworks file and "Reference Manager (RIS)" as the Import Option.
Using connection files
It is possible to use connection files to search library catalogues and a few databases (e.g. PubMed, Web of Science) directly from EndNote. We recommend that you only use this option only for searching library catalogues.
To search the TU Delft Library catalogue from EndNote:
- Download the connection file for the TU Delft Library catalogue from the library website.
- Save the connection file to the folder where these files are stored. This folder can be found by choosing Edit -> Preferences -> Folder Locations from the EndNote menu.
- If necessary, restart EndNote.
- Go to Tools -> Online Search...
- Select the TU Delft connection file and click "Choose".
- Perform a search and use the “Retrieve records from:” option to copy the desired number of references to your EndNote library.
