Customising your EndNote Library

Customising the main view

The main view can be customised to suit your own needs and preferences. For example, you can:

  • Change the fields that are displayed or change the order
  • Change the font type and size
  • Make EndNote open a specific library at start-up

To customise the main view, select Edit -> Preferences and explore the options!

Customising fields

Customising fields can be very useful. For example you can define your own fields, such as "Thesis Chapter Numbers" or "Ratings" or "Read/Unread" fields. A number of custom fields are available for this purpose.

To add, change or remove fields:

  • Choose Edit -> Preferences -> Reference Types -> Modify Reference Types...
  • Delete the field name to remove a field, and simply type in text to add a field.
  • Changes apply only for the specified Reference Type. If you want the changes to apply to all Reference Types, click on the button Apply to all Ref Types.

Using the term lists

EndNote can suggest author names as you type by using an Author term list. This reduces spelling mistakes and spelling variations in author names. This feature is also available for Journals and Keywords. The term lists are automatically updated as you enter references into your library. In the Tools menu you will find several options for managing term lists.

Sharing your EndNote library

EndNote is not designed for simultaneous use by multiple users. When sharing your EndNote library, you can avoid corruption by using the Windows network security options. References can be shared by using the import/export options.
