Open Access Publishing

Open access means free and permanent access.
In publishing, this means being allowed to read articles or books free of charge.

Traditional publishing model Open access publishing model
Free for authors Free for readers
Paid for by readers or the readers' employers/libraries Paid for by authors or the authors' employers/sponsors

Advantages for scientists

  • higher online visibility: easier to find, using Google for example
  • more people have access
  • more people read and cite the publication

Misconceptions about open access publishing

  • There is no peer review, so the quality is lower
Open access publishing can include peer review. If you publish an open access article in an existing journal, the peer review process is the same as for any other article. The differences are that you have to pay for the publication and, of course, that the resulting article is freely available to all.
  • Universities will not give accreditation for open access publications
Most universities support open access and will give the same accreditation for open access publications in reputable journals as for traditional publications.

TU Delft and Open Access

TU Delft is one of the signatories of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access and encourages open access publishing by its employees.

TU Delft Repository

The TU Delft Repository is the institutional repository of TU Delft. An increasing proportion of scientific output is made freely available there. Help is available for questions about copyright and other practical issues. Publications in the TU Delft Repository are collected by national and international repositories. This means that publications in the TU Delft Repository are also accessible through, for example, the Dutch national repository NARCIS and the huge US-based repository OAIster.
