Instructions Information Literacy

After following the first year's instruction information literacy, which is built in and available in Blackboard, the students should be able to select the relevant information sources, search these sources in the right way, and report properly about the results, i.e. make correct references in the report, make a correct and consistent bibliography, paraphrasing, citing and avoiding of plagiarism.

Checklist for teachers

Also a role has been granted to the teachers, in whose subject the information literacy instruction is incorporated. For the teachers concerned a checklist has been composed. This will help the teachers organize the information literacy instruction sessions.

Directions for the Information Literacy instructions

As mentioned before, the first year's information literacy instruction is built in and available in Blackboard. The students follow the instruction during sessions at the faculty, but can access the instruction afterwards and anywhere for reference purposes. A document has been prepared explaining how the students can enroll in and start the instruction.

Scoring rubric for assessing students Information Literacy Skills

As From the notes for assessors: Purpose of the scoring rubric

The purpose of the scoring rubric  is to grade students’ information literacy skills. We use the term “information literacy skills” to describe students’ competencies in sifting through the abundance of information with which they are presented to find particular items of information that are of value to them, and which meet quality standards such as reliability and topicality. Accordingly, students with adequate information literacy skills are capable of making critical judgements. They are also able to incorporate information in a meaningful way into their own knowledge products, such as research reports. A third aspect pinpointed in the context of information literacy skills involves the ethical use of information. Students must respect copyright and academic standards, such as the use of citations and legally purchased tools (software).

Teaching staff can use this scoring rubric to grade students’ performances (in terms of information literacy skills) on the basis of their product (paper) and the process report.

To read more about the scoring rubric and the way to apply it, go to: Scoring rubric for Information Literacy Skills: Notes for assessors.
