Preventing plagiarism

Blackboard now has a tool for detecting plagiarism: SafeAssign.

With SafeAssign you can compare the content of papers submitted to you against:

• papers on the internet
• publications in the ProQuest ABI/Inform bibliographic database (mostly business and financial publications)
• papers previously submitted to SafeAssign by TU Delft
• papers volunteered for this purpose by students around the world

Teachers can use SafeAssign in their Blackboard courses by selecting SafeAssignment from the Assignment Manager menu. Alternatively, teachers can use the Direct Submit option to check only suspected papers.

SafeAssign will generate an originality report. In this report, sections or paragraphs that are also found in the referenced documents are highlighted. You will have to check these sections yourself, as they may be legitimate citations!

If you regularly check for plagiarism and tell your students about it, you will prevent future plagiarism. You can even show your students the originality report with their paper, pointing out how they should have used citations or paraphrased instead of copying and pasting.
